was a crude rock carving done by an amateur named Charlie. As the Arcadia colony readied to vote on the New World mortgage that would open the planet to fast cash and off-world developers, one piece ot rock couldn't be very important. Except for one thing.
The artist wasn't human.
Charlie was an otter, native on a world where humans were the alien invaders who hunted Charlie's tribe for their pelts. And when Charlie, trapper Cary Longan, and young outfitter Mattie Orvalo carried the statuę from the hills to the city, they ran a gauntlet of wilderness perils, opposition — and attempted murder, while the tale of their trek and Charlie's art spread across the planet like wildfire. They didn't know how, or why, but Charlie's statuę was the most important object on Arcadia.
