They suspect that de Keradel was that lover, but even they cannot guess the monstrous power which he is trying to invoke— the “Gatherer” who comes at the moment of sacrifice amid the standing stones.
Dr. Alan Caranac has a special part to play in that ritual, for he remembers—or thinks he remembers— Ys and Dahut and the fate that overcame them. So now he must go alone to de Keradel’s island and destroy the evil if he can.
