"Unarmed Victory" is Lord Russell's outspoken analysis of the political events that nearly brought the world to war during the Cuban and the Sino-Indian crises.
In it, he presents his full correspondence, by letter and cable, with such world figures as Khrushchev, Kennedy, U Thant, Sukarno, Nehru and Chou En-lai. His correspondence with these leaders came from his deep conviction that peace can and must be achieved by compromise, and from his indignation at the thought that civilization might be destroyed at any time by a diplomatic miscalculation.
There is much in "Unarmed Victory" that every sane reader will applaud. There is also much that will cause sharp controversy and discussion - for Lord Russell's thesis runs counter to many of the assumptions and doctrines of Western policy in the Cold War.
But his new book, like everything he has written, bears the distinctive stamp of his personality and thought, and puts forward ideas that, they must be unpopular, are vital to the discussion of the one great question of our time - War or Peace?
