A PROBLEM IN WIZARDS
Finding the naked countess Yvette hiding behind a bush was only the beginning of Sergeant Thorolf's problems—then things got worse. Yvette wanted Thorolf's cloak, then she wanted him to bring her to Rhaetia on his horse, find her a wizard to change her appearance to throw off her pursuers, and—worse—pay for everything. She was fleeing Duke Gondomar, who had overrun her country, as he would like to do her person. Even so she had the nerve to call Thorolf a common wage earner, a basely practical, unromantic Rhaetian, and as out of place as a noblewoman's consort as a pig in a horse race!
Thorolf took Yvette to see Doctor Bardi, an ancient, slightly senile iatromage, to disguise her magically as a dark, dumpy female. Unfortunately Bardi neglected to mention that Yvette should avoid alcohol. Yvette changed as promised—but into something like an octopus.
Keeping Yvette moist, Thorolf sought out another wizard—he found Doctor Orlandus, a powerful sage with a bad reputation. Orlandus claimed he could change her back, for a price, and would keep her until paid. Once again, Yvette seemed different after her nagical treatment—restored in body, but not in mind. Regardless, Thorolf found that, whether he wanted to or not, he simply must leave the city for a while.
An accidental encounter with throlls nearly placed Thorolf in the cooking pot. But Thorolf held them off—¬and won the trolls over—by capturing a valuable fire-breathing dragon for them. Unfortunately, this also won him the dubious reward of a fine, squat, smelly troll girl—who thought him skinny, hairless, and ugly. With this reluctant bride waiting, Thorolf was more determined than ever to free his beloved Yvette from Orlandus' grasp. But how?
