Yentl the Yeshiva Boy - Isaac Bashevis Singer

Recognizing that Yentl seems to have the soul and disposition of a man, her father studies the Torah and other holy books with her. When he dies, Yentl feels she no longer has a reason to remain in her village, and so, late one night, she cuts off her hair, dresses as a young man, and sets out to find a yeshiva where she can continue her studies and live secretly as a man. On the road she meets Avigdor, who invites her to come to his yeshiva. Yentl - now calling herself Anshel - agrees, and they study together. Avigdor suspects nothing and the two become close friends. Even so, Yentl begins to realise the folly of her actions: her quest for spiritual satisfaction has hopelessly entangled her in a life that is too emotionally and physically taxing to maintain. She must choose to live with her impossible situation or reveal herself and risk losing Avigdor forever. Isaac Bashevis Singer was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1978, and his mastery of the story form was singled out for praise by the Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy: "Singer has perhaps given of his best as a consummate storyteller and stylist in the short stories and in the numerous and fantastic long stories." This edition of 'Yentl the Yeshiva Boy', one of Singer's best-known stories, is embellished throughout with Antonio Frasconi's elegant woodcuts.
