West of the Sun - Edgar Pangborn

WEST OF THE SUN describes the impact of Man's intrusion into a strange and distant world, a planet the newcomers call Lucifer. Menacing creatures, bizarre plants - and among them two humanoid species involved in mutual strife. What effect will the marooned crew of the space-ship Argo have on their unconsenting hosts? "Man is neither good nor bad, but both," says one of them. "But he can swing the balance."

A.D. 2056, and mankind has penetrated the distances of the galaxy. But even Man's arrogance cannot overcome the unforeseen technical failure, the engineering error which the twenty-first century views with the horror once reserved for moral evil.

And so the six people on Argo were catapulted on to an unknown world, a planet full of colour and scent and sound quite beyond their experience. The planet Lucifer had not asked for them, though in its own strange way it and its inhabitants made them welcome. But whether the mysterious incomers from a world beyond the red and white twin moons of Lucifer would prove to be gods or demons was something only they and their descendants could decide.
