Neil Jordan's second novel, THE DREAM OE A BEAST, is quite literally, a dream. A man leaves his suburban home and goes to his office where he is working on a drawing for a campaign to advertise the scent of musk, whose animal attraction is peculiarly appropriate to the relationship developing between himself and the woman who has given him the commission. They meet and couple at the zoo where animals are escaping into a decaying city, whilst at home his loved ones become uneasy about his degenerating appearance and behaviour. In a phantasmagoria of frightening apocalyptic intensity, a storm finally breaks over the city and the beast achieves an awesome apotheosis.
