The English painter Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) paid homage in his pictures to a Golden Age. For his "Flower Book" published posthumously, he painted 38 gouaches inspired by traditional names of flowers - no book of flowers in the conventional sense, but a diary, richly laden with symbols, of the artist's secret yearnings.
